Then what is a quel?

Iirc, quel is a form of the nominative pronoun "that," so "prequel" is "before that thing" and "sequel" is "following that thing."

Due to the influence of the Normans upon the Saxons, we all speak French without knowing it! Laissez les bons temps roulez!

I don't know about that, but "whelmed" actually means "in water." That's why overwhelmed means having more than you can handle.
