There's a new character in Anna Karenina who is more interesting than the others. He is some kind of nutty communist with, as far as I can tell, schizophrenia or Asperger's disease, and also an alcoholic. I'm waiting for him to fly off the handle and kill someone, possibly Konstantin Levin, who is a very tiresome person.
I think when people are talking about the "excellent characterization" in this book, they mean "everyone is as boring as they are in real life."

My old Physics teacher’s best day was when he was demonstrating gyroscopic precession.

He sat on a stool with a bicycle wheel with handles. After spinning it up to speed, he rotated left, and then right, with no effort involved.

It looked like a lot of fun.

We have the bins here, but they come in varying sizes, and mostly in blacks and greens. They congregate at the curbs (kerbs) twice a week, holidays or not.

Of course, the industrial strength bins are called “Dempsey Dumpsters,” and to my knowledge, if it isn’t a Dempsey, it isn’t a “Dumpster,” just a large trash bin on iron wheels.
