I wonder if you need fire retardants for furniture made of wool and stuffed with horsehair, or if you need them only for synthetics and plastic foams?
If 97% of us have this in our blood, that may be why there are fewer documented cases of human combustion these days.

All furnitue must comply to a standard (I forget the number now) THe easy otion for furniture manufacturers is to use fabrics that don’t burn too well under the ignition source. This does not mean they will not burn if the temperature around them is high enough and they will usually give off more toxic fumes when they do.
Wool does not sustain a fire very well by itself but will ignite easily and if there is another heat souce it burns very well. Wool is usually blended with Poly or other syntehtics.
I used to work with non-toxic fire retardants the problem with them is getting them to bond long term with fabric as they are usually salts and tend to be easily removed from fabric.

Californication at it’s best. Check out the video at the link for a comparison between burn times of modern furnishing versus vintage furnishings. It was an eye opener for our fire department. Modern construction materials have created a lot of death traps. You literally have only a few minutes to get out.
The cyanide gas released from burning modern petroleum derived materials is now thought to be a potential cause of what was previously thought to be firefighter deaths from heart attacks.
If the test at the link doesn’t scare you shitless, nothing will. If nothing else it may persuade you to change the batteries in your smoke alarms. BTW, not all of those protect you in all instances.

By the time the room on the right is fully involved, if it happens at night when the family is asleep, the family is probably dead from the lethal gases if the alarms didn’t wake them.
