Our small dog was attacked by a doe a few months ago in our backyard while I was out there in the yard.
(went out to call the dog after hearing a ruckus)
The doe had a few fawns on the other side of the hog wire fence yelling their heads off and I got there just in time to see the doe come after the dog, trounced it and was turning to come back for a 2nd strike and I yelled and dog and I ran. The doe followed us for a ways and then stopped and snorted. Then left. The dog was unhurt, but a nervous wreck for hours.

I had the same thing happen this year also. A doe with 2 fawns decided to take up residence in our backyard. So for about a month I would carry my pistol with me to take the dog out. One evening I got into a staring contest with the doe at about 30' and when she didn't back down I shot a nearby tree stump. She took off and wasn't a problem after that.
