These scandals happen every day in Washington. We don't hear about most of them. Had the administration wanted to conceal Petraeus’s indiscretion they have the power to do so. Since he came to public attention political strategists and the media have mentioned Petraeus as a possible political candidate. Democrats would consider him a serious rival. Resigning with a public apology for adultery—probably known by the White House for some time—disqualifies Petraeus as a future candidate. Remember what happened to Herman Cain.
