I retired in Nicaragua and I enjoy it. Very inexpensive and becoming popular with North Americans. Check out this site for lots of info and contacts.
I’m in Hong Kong and the only way you can live here is either get a job (work visa) or marry someone from here (dependent visa).
If you want to own a gun...forget it here. You can own but but you need to store it at the local shooting range. If you want to keep it at home then you need government permission to do so.
Don’t ask me. I was born here, raised my kids here, served in this nations Army and I’ll die here. And no marxist pig will ever chase me out.
Cuba is a beautiful island.
Allow all Cubans to immigrate to California or the other west coast states, and the Great Northeast. The Castros may move to D.C. and live on the citizens’s dime, as they always have.
Annex Cuba and allow it to run as an independent financial state analogous to Hong Cong.
Problem settled.
Rodney just explained my situation here in the Philippines, but I will add to it.
This is great if you are single, but I do not know if it would be the best for married to a western lady with family.
A family might have trouble adjusting to third world culture, but it might work in some of the more sophisticated resort areas.
As Rodney mentioned, we live on less then $1000 per month.
I get online mailings every few days from WWW.Internationalliving.com, and WWW.Escapeartist.com
Both specialize in central/south America, and they have very glowing reviews. Look them up and get on their mailing list.
If I were not here, I would be hot to trot to central America.
Before moving here, I spent about 8 years in central Europe, my last being 5 years in Slovakia. I moved here from Slovakia in Jan. 2009, following a one month visit in August of 2008.
I live in Dalaguete, Cebu www.dalaguete.gov.ph
Google FATCA. They have already closed the door, and it’s almost locked.
You better pick right or you’ll end up kidnapped or dead. Americans are targets all over the world. Some of the ex-pat communities are infested with druggies, leftists and hippies who will rip you off. Gran Pacifica is a modern North American middle class community in Nicaragua on the Pacific coast where you can buy a small castita (bungalow) for about $114,000. Unless you go native, you’re going to pay a premium for an American lifestyle in a third world country.
Good luck.

Singapore
Belize? Honduras? Dominican Republic? Or are they just for cruise stops?
I was just looking into this today. I remember Rush getting a letter from the president of Panama begging him to relocate there and talking up their economic freedom. At the time you could establish residency with either a large bank deposit or large real estate purchase. It seems the political landscape has changed their recently though, may not be as easy.
Heritage has an economic freedom rating which is headed by Hong Kong - 1st, Singapore - 2nd, Marititius, Canada, Switzerland, N.Z., Chile, Ireland are in there and Australia is 3rd. I’ve looked into Australia and they have a list of in demand professions that put you on the fast track to citizenship (I’m eligible as a Veterinarian). Unfortunately, they’ve elected a fabian socialist and could be headed in the same direction. The US is 10th so there aren’t a lot of better places to go even now.
This is a huge opportunity for some country to attract the best talent in the world to their shores/borders. If there was just one country willing to keep the American idea alive I’d be willing to invest my money and talents.
I’m not leaving. I owe the IRS. It is a living hell when you owe them. Or when THEY say you owe them.
I’m sure more of my fellow Americans will fall into this category as well in the next few years.
Plus, these 3rd world crap holes everyone is posting about are not as nice as everyone is thinking they are. If they were so great, why are the young women who live there always trying to marry an American to get over here?
The world is going to hell in a hand-basket. The USA was the last beacon of hope.
Sorry. It’s the truth. Everyone... take care of you and yours. Pray.
We'll probably maintain a place in the US too so we can keep our citizenship here... probably in TX somewhere... that part we're still trying to decide on.
You are better off fighting here because Costa Rica has no military and it will be taken by the communists whether it be China or Chavez. They will steam roll through there like nothing and take everything on their way to Mexico and the US itself while Hussein colludes and hands them the keys.
actually, you would be better off living in Oklahoma or Texas.
Moving overseas is fine if you are rich, or if you have family in the country. My Husband is from the Philippines, so no problem...and it is cheap to live in his native small town. But Manila is as expensive as the USA....
Here in the Philippines, lots of guys who married local gals retire here and are happy...there are also apartments etc that have lots of Americans, often retired military, in them, so you wouldn’t be too lonely.
But picking up your family and moving somewhere overseas is a big burden: where will you work? Where will the kids go to school? What will you do if you get sick?
Costa rica is touted by a lot of Americans, but it seems to attract liberals, so would you be happy there?
