Why is Free Republic so slow to load, and when it does, it throws me off and I get the "Cannot connect" message from Windows. And it's NOT just during debates. It's happening all the time now. Is it just MY computer? I know HuffPo is down because of the storm, but FR is out of California. In the 12 years I've been here I've never had so much trouble with this site. Until about a month ago.

i noticed mine is extremely slow to load, but loads other sites fast—strange
Same problem here. I’ve found other more reliable sites to compensate for FR hardware/software problems.
It’s getting bad.
the place is shutting itself down.
It’s a secret government plot to take your mind off Benghazi.
I thought it was just my computer. I just hit “post reply” maybe 7 or 8 times right on this post before it finally got this far.
It is actually happening on 3 different computers I have, tho oddly enough I have an older one with Windows Vista and it seems to work far better than the others.
Now I will have to hi “post several times and hope I don’t get a double post.
Lighten up Francis.
I now right click on links I want to access, then copy and go to a new window and load it that way.
I notice FR has problems frequently, but I believe it to be the result of leftist hackers.
Go on over to the FreeRepublic2 yahoo chat group for the continuing slug fest over what’s happening and what to do about it. It is not just you:

It has s-l-o-w-l-y gotten worse. It used to be just during high traffic times. Now, it takes forever to load all the time, articles, don’t come up, and heaven help you if you actually want to post a comment.
Jim, you guys have done great for a dozen years, but it is time to seek professional assistance to solve the problem.
I could buy the hacking theory by the Left, though.
Hey, ya’ll. I’m now whiz bang computer nerd. But my guess is that we are 6 days outside of an election and the house is packed.
The HVAC ain’t pumpin enough air, too many toilets are flushing and the entrances and exits are blocked.
Be proud that the slow tide is a swell of FReepers engaging to turn this ship.
(It’s my guess)
Jim has addressed this in a few places, but I’m going to link to them so you can see them:

I’m also pinging Jim in case he wants to add more.
It is bad. This is such a base web site, there is no reason that it should be so terribly slow.
I would like to collaborate with fellow Freepers on a conservative comedy show(s).
This doesn’t have anything to do with internet speed but I had to fit it in somewhere.
