What is wrong with Free Republic?
Suggestions to make your FR pages load faster ^ | 10/29/12 | self

Posted on 10/30/2012 5:16:13 PM PDT by boop

Why is Free Republic so slow to load, and when it does, it throws me off and I get the "Cannot connect" message from Windows. And it's NOT just during debates. It's happening all the time now. Is it just MY computer? I know HuffPo is down because of the storm, but FR is out of California. In the 12 years I've been here I've never had so much trouble with this site. Until about a month ago.

No problem. Thanks.

By the way, did you feel that sudden burst in performance? Or was it just my imagination? I think the east coast just logged off and went to bed.

“Saves cuss words.”

Well then, I’ll have to try that. I was trying to get on here during the debate and some of those cuss words were flying. My husband said my behavior was very erratic. He thought Linda Blair (The Exorcist) had come to visit.

Anyhow, I’ll try your suggestion.

Oh, well that might be a bit harder on a cell phone. I found my cell phone to be pretty much useless for internet access (it’s ancient pre-android technology). Gonna have to upgrade one of these days.

To: Let's Roll
Since implementing these tips (link re-posted below), I have had no issues downloading the threads, either on my laptop or my mobile phone device.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2951974/posts

As for those who come to this thread to bitch and complain about how slow the threads are loading, I have to ask if they contribute financially to this website. I suspect that most of them do not and that they expect to come here for absolutely free and get performance like it was Google.

Well this site isn't Google. There are not billions of dollars in advertising fees streaming in to support the infrastructure. In fact, no advertisements at all. No annoying pop-ups and banner ads.

However, if each regular user gave $1 a day ($30 a month), this site would be rocking and rolling with it's own data center.

I give $30 a month and it's worth every penny. I used to subscribe to several magazines and two newspapers. They costed me over $100 a month. I made the decision several years ago to cancel all of those and give that money to alternative media like Free Republic. (I also contribute to several podcasts that I get my information from.)

I urge everybody here to do the same. Give up those newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Give up HBO (Netflix is so much better - and cheaper). Give up on cable entirely and get a Roku box instead. That way you are not supporting the likes of CNN, MTV and MSNBC, etc.

Use some of that saved money to support Free Republic and if enough do that, this site will load as fast as Google.

*******

Could very well be!

Not sure if this helps or not, but FR works better on my cell phone than on my 3 months old laptop or my 2 year old desktop. Weird.

BTW, I still don’t have a job but I’m hoping you can use some money for whatever we need and I’m pitching some into the kitty. Wish I could restart my monthly and the extra help but most of the job offers I’m getting are for minimum ~ no one wants to pay here :-(

When I first hit the FreeRepublic link to access the site it takes from 5 to 8 seconds to come up, always, and has for several years. I think this is a clue to the overall problem. I am going to trace the link to see where the delay is. No other site does that. They always come up in less than 2 seconds, most less than 1 second. Something is amiss and it may be that Freerepublic access is routed in a way that it can be scrutinized more thoroughly than others. Hopefully a trace will show that.

Follow-up: I traced it about 15 times and reached the end node in an average of 46 msec which is certainly fast enough, and not what I expected. It seems that whatever is slowing down my screen from loading happens after the connection is made to Freerepublic. It could be queuing but I doubt it. I didn't see any special or suspicious routing either. It looks like the route from my location is fine. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bitching about Freerepublic. I would be lost without it. I just wanted to see if I could ascertain anything that might help with people who are complaining.

I’m getting 80ms intervals. I checked some other major sites and they average between 27ms and 45ms.

Does Ipad/cell phone traffic get routed through different servers? Perhaps that would explain some people saying they have no problem that route.

Look, 100% of us come here for the very reason you suggest, to bch and complain about something. Access to FR is worthy of a fine bitch and complaint. It helps us vent.

Now, you are absolutely correct that everyone must give what they can. When I was out on the ledge yesterday in a rage, yes siree, I wondered if all those able to get on site, when I couldn’t, were paying monthly, or was I paying for them but didn’t have a prayer of getting onsite

Everyone should pay a monthly minimum for whatever amount it takes to run the place, a world class site. Period. I suggest it even be required. Jim knows that no access is deadly and people are whacked about it.

This is not a charity. It’s a business where a return is expected.

Let Jim work on it and let the venting be a safety valve that just may save the place for allowing it.

Sure, cell traffic starts out on a different node, i.e. the cell site, so it will be routed somewhat differently. I am going to try connecting with my Iphone to see what how well it works. *********update: I just tried it and it paints the screen in no more than 1 second. Hmmm, it has something to do with PC traffic and not cell traffic. I dunno, but will keep looking for anything that might help.

It is very, very rare that a linked image slows a page load here.

To be perfectly honest I don’t have any experience in any part of comedy writing or tv production.
Still, there seems to be a untapped conservative talent/humor that is mostly overlooked.

Anyhow, almost every other thread could be turned into a comedy/sitcom/mockumentary.
Parodies and satires of MSNBC, the Weather Channel,Liberal Politicians,Hollywood,OWS (lib protesters),a quasi-dictater wanna be,enviromentalist.....
Any project like I am suggesting would take investors/advertisers willing to back it?
Which I am clueless about but still would love to be apart of any part of developing something like this.
Sit around a roomful of people and bounce ideas back and forth.

I took the advice on a thread from a couple days ago and disabled everything on my sidebars (except Breaking News and Tools) - seems to be loading faster since then - still not as good as, say, Drudge, but better.....

Does anyone know how to email Jim? I used Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4 to collect a session of system data that shows 8 seconds worth of info on trying to load the FR main page. It might be helpful to them to see what my PC sees when it’s trying to paint the page. The data is wide across Excel, so I would have to email the file.

That sounds logical, thanks for the added information. Nice to have a helpful response rather than the juvenile response that followed.
