In a tough area of London a school which has high expectations of all students

One of the reasons Afro-Caribbean boys underachieve is because schools don’t have the same expectations of them and don’t hold them to the same standards as other ethnic groups. At our school we hold every child to the same high standards. What is unusual about our school isn’t that we have strict rules, but that we enforce them. Quite often in school they will have an elaborate code of conduct, but they just won’t enforce it, and that sends a very bad message to children.

The bigotry of low expectations. There should be one standard for all.

‘Too often schools make excuses for students.’ NO, ‘Too often parents raise a ruckus when students are expected to do anything.’ Oh, and this school has strict discipline which they can ENFORCE? I bet they can kick students out if they want.

And that, my friends, is the difference.

Interesting. It appears to be the British equivalent of a charter school. Plenty of experiments in the U.S. - private, charters, and regular public schools - have shown that “underprivileged” students can get excellent results in schools with strict standards and traditional instruction.

Why this would be shocking, I do not know. Adults all over the world know that they learned to read, write, compute, and act like civilized people in schools with strict behavior standards and traditional instruction!
