The shuttles, which are stocked with all kinds of freeze-dried and desiccated foods, will have to accommodate the entire population that is to be evacuated.

So it would be a trifle crowded. Additionally, our normal routines of being able to visit other Habitats, which are under different time zones, would no longer work.

Essentially, it's "lifeboat rules". In case that doesn't sound ominous enough, keep in mind that the person in charge of the evacuation shuttle is the one who is armed.

We have some options, such as linking several shuttles together and rotating them, but the first priority is getting as many people aboard as possible and getting them safely away from the calamity.

The problem with planning really well for such events is that we do not know what that ostensible calamity may be.

Worst case scenario, is a situation in which all Habitats begin losing their air. If that should happen, complete evacuation is the only option.

On our Habitats, we grow our own food. It's one of the primary tasks absorbing our daily interests and activities. On an emergency evacuation, that won't be possible in the normal way. And the evacuation trip to the only other safe location, planet Earth, will take considerable time.

Without being able to know where the relative positions will be, we would have to consider an evacuation time of as much as two years. Our stored food would not last that long.

That's why I said our choices would be more limited.

None of it is likely to happen, but it is my job to consider all worst-case scenarios, and plan accordingly.

Accordingly, I am working on alternatives to yeasts, mushrooms, and algae. Just don't ask for details.
