I don’t go to weddings much, either - the last one was a church wedding for a couple in our congregation who had been legally married (in Mexico) at least 15 years earlier. It was lovely, but we couldn’t go to the reception because of some schedule issue.
With ten children, we’re bound to be involved in a wedding at some point! The trend in my family, for both marriages and deaths, has been to have an immediate-family church ceremony, with a reception at a location and date convenient for the larger constellation of family and friends.
And I get lots of book recommendations on FR. There used to be a quarterly “What are you reading?” thread that always had good ideas, but I may have missed it last time. I recently re-read “The Razor’s Edge” by Somerset Maugham, which I read originally in high school. Liked it then, liked it now, although for different reasons ;-). It was mentioned on a thread about Bill Murray, because he starred in a pretty-good movie version.
Er... *blush* A year ago, I had to give up the “upper tiers” on my TV service, and now, though I’m “told” I have the “lower 25 channels,” I feel fortunate to get eight of them.
I really miss BBCA, ESPN, Speed, and various other channels (I hate when I draw a blank!) like Discovery, History, Biography and others. They are my preferences. I have no desire to watch sitcoms, since the last of M*A*S*H and Home Improvement.
Have you read my blog, yet? If so, keep checking it...my life gets worse.
How could I have missed a thread on books? My BAD!
The Stig is molting BIG time, now, so I have supplemented his diet with liquid vitamins and conditioning supplement. Still, I will have to transfer him to his “motel room” and vacuum out his cage. It is looking really fluffy, even though I clean it every other day!
I’m working on one Last Project, then will finish up the ones I have made (tuck in the ends, trim, etc.,) and get it sent off no later than Friday. If you need it sooner, let me know.
No, Friday is fine. I’m just buried this year with all the activities and classes the children are in, and I’m having trouble finding time for any festival contributions. The teens will all volunteer, at least.
I bought a sponsorship with an ad for Greyhound Crossroads. It may end up being “In Memory of Ashdown,” because she’s getting weaker every day. We have to help her up from the floor if she doesn’t have the stronger leg underneath her to get her hindquarters lifted. But she still hops out the door to lie in the sun, and expects a walk when DP gets home from work.
I’m so sorry about Ash. She loves you and the family and will not willingly go over the Rainbow Bridge. She will be there to meet all of you!
*snif*
Dang. I’m going to bed. I can’t handle this...
Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you!
The shuttles, which are stocked with all kinds of freeze-dried and desiccated foods, will have to accommodate the entire population that is to be evacuated.
So it would be a trifle crowded. Additionally, our normal routines of being able to visit other Habitats, which are under different time zones, would no longer work.
Essentially, it's "lifeboat rules". In case that doesn't sound ominous enough, keep in mind that the person in charge of the evacuation shuttle is the one who is armed.
We have some options, such as linking several shuttles together and rotating them, but the first priority is getting as many people aboard as possible and getting them safely away from the calamity.
The problem with planning really well for such events is that we do not know what that ostensible calamity may be.
Worst case scenario, is a situation in which all Habitats begin losing their air. If that should happen, complete evacuation is the only option.
On our Habitats, we grow our own food. It's one of the primary tasks absorbing our daily interests and activities. On an emergency evacuation, that won't be possible in the normal way. And the evacuation trip to the only other safe location, planet Earth, will take considerable time.
Without being able to know where the relative positions will be, we would have to consider an evacuation time of as much as two years. Our stored food would not last that long.
That's why I said our choices would be more limited.
None of it is likely to happen, but it is my job to consider all worst-case scenarios, and plan accordingly.
Accordingly, I am working on alternatives to yeasts, mushrooms, and algae. Just don't ask for details.
Kudzu paste.
Replicators.
The Star Trek kind, not the Stargate SG-1 kind.
You see, despite the difficulties with our research into FAX MAXHINES, the simple building of food items should not be beyond our technical capabilities.
I compare it to printer technology. We now have printers that can dispense human cells and fabricate body parts, so developing the ability to print out a ham and cheese sandwich should be achievable.
Baked goods seems the place to start, since they are mostly dry components to start with.
Additionally, once the basic design parameters are worked out, we can have contests to expand our recipe/programs.
Will there be room in the lifeboat for printers?
Anyhoo, I’m going to the shower. Don’t let me miss the emergency disboarding!
Save your salt boxes as civilizations have fought war over such necessities of life!
“You better get out of here, Finchley !!
The electric razor buzzing down the staircase ?
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!”
Egads, The Brave Little Toaster is possessed!
I never realized how exensive tea was until I started to buy it in multiple boxes.
I love exensive tea in the bottle and with a cork but boxed is okay, too. I’m not judging...
Good to see your post!
Also important to remember that ordinary salt is fortified with iodine, so as to prevent thyroid difficulties in areas of the country where iodine is not prevalent in the soil.
Eat more dirt!
I get mine from Fox News.
I watched a couple of Red Dwarf clips today and enjoyed them very much. Must pursue further....
‘Face, your brems are awesome!
Re: your tagline. Who’s the bruja? I’ve used chamomile and fennel seed teas, but the most effective treatments came from my sifu. He actually cured plantar fasciitis in a few days as opposed to western medicine’s few months.
Did you begin with “The End”?
