A dog, confined within his own yard, was shot and killed by an Eldorado, Ill. police officer who had mistakenly arrived to the wrong house to investigate a report of a stolen ladder.
According to Wednesday's publication of WSIL TV, the shooting took place on Sunday evening, when an officer arrived to the home of Jason Robershaw.
Robershaw claims that he heard a knock at his back door, followed by gun shots.
Those shots took the life of his 6-year-old German shepherd, "Smokey."
The grieving owner describes the horrific scene outside of his back door:

Im with you. Shoot my dog and its on
“The police go with the addresses they have. The second they go to the internet to either verify or obtain an address they need at least an administrative level warrant.”
And why shouldn’t they have to get a warrant? This moron wasn’t chasing an armed robber, rapist or murderer, it was over a stolen fracking ladder. That’s not even grand theft.
It was an unconsitutional search, period.
The officer wasn’t afraid of the dog (unless he possesses an IQ in the single digits). He saw an opportunity to shoot a dog and took it.
That’s ruthlessness, not cowardice.
I have total hatred for cops anymore due to their constant killing of animals and people for no reason other than being trigger happy.
If I ever need to have my dog put down I guess I can call the police and get it done for free and save a big vet bill. Why was the cop in the back yard instead of at the front door? I’d consider that criminal trespass. I hope the guy gets fired. As a security guard said to my neighbor’s tree trimmer when trespassing, “you could be going home tonight to your wife in a box.”
The last couple times the police have called for donations, I just gave them a piece of my mind about the totally out of control police department.
lucky for you I Hate chihuahuas.
Cops enter almost everywere through the rear.
How many pets have to die because of a knuckle dragging badge monkey cannot keep his burger hook off the bang switch?
Because as established in this thread, police officers are rewarded and abetted when they skirt the Constitution.
Therefore, they see no need to honor the Constitutional rights of the “little people”.
The peasantry needs to learn to fear the knights of the realm, don’t you know. (You didn’t? Oh. :) )
Is it now SOP for LEOs to shoot the family dog first upon calling on a house for any reason at all?
I don’t dislike dogs but don’t love them and really don’t understand keeping one chained up, fenced in, confined and just having it. I sure don’t understand living in the house with one but to each his own.
I can understand feeling the need to shoot one if attacked but this has gotten way out of hand.
Your hatred of chihuahuas is immaterial to the fact that you aided and abetted cops as they violated Constitutional protections.
Why the hell was the jackass in the back yard without a search warrant or any probably cause to enter? If he had come to my backdoor he might have been shot himself.
People should not go to the back door if they have legitimate business. Backdoors are for family only at my house.
This thread has taken an interesting turn.
Want to shoot a dog at the wrong house but don’t have a warrant?
No problem! Ask a friendly postal service worker to skirt around the Constitution for you. He’ll even justify it!
No wonder the problem is so rampant; we have government employees even on Free Republic who admit to aiding and abetting such unconstitutional behavior without shame.
For a ladder, a freaking ladder. I know, first the ladder and then your lawn chairs and then your lawn mower.
Someone steals your car from your driveway and maybe someone will stop by tomorrow.
Because, as has been established in this thread, cops will go to another government employee to get around the Constitution.
Take a cop who has no regard for the Constitution + a desire to shoot living things without cause + no regard for his fellow American = Dog shooting cop
We have an occupation army in blue.
But does their hiding make sense?
Few things will make people more angry and vengeful toward them all than when just one of them does something like this.
The subconscious thinking goes something like this, "If one does it, they all are bad and everyone of them deserves whatever bad shite that comes their way."
One bad apple spoils the PR and good relations for them all and lowers them all to that bad one's level in the minds of those who, once upon a time, they were to serve and protect.
Whatever happened to those days of my not so distant youth?
Again? This is outrageous.
For a cop to take this much initiative over a ladder, that's either a flimsy cover story, or the ladder belonged to a friend of the cop.
