It is a female USB port which the owner's manual says is compatible with:
  1. WMA (have no idea what that is)
  2. MP3
  3. AAC files(have no idea what that is)
  4. iPod
  5. USB flash drives

As others have suggested, simply drag MP3 files onto a thumb drive, and plug the thumb drive into the USB port. I do this with my car audio system, but the only problem is that usually there is a limit, in my case ~100 songs, to what the car audio will see. Once beyond that, the audio simply ignores anything else. The work around is to put songs into folders, but then it's difficult to navigate between folders using the car audio controls, and the MP3s are not seen by the car audio in the same order as you put them on the thumb drive. This is what makes an MP3 player advantageous: it is easier to select the MP3 you want than if you use a thumb drive plugged into the USB port, especially if you have many MP3s to navigate through.

suggest putting a few mp3 flies on a flash drive, plug it into your car, follow owners manual stereo instructions - should play your music files.

no need to buy and mess with an mp3 player.

I, too, thought I would have to buy an mp3 player for car, but decided to try a flash drive first - worked like a charm, and wonder why anyone would plug a player into their car when a flash drive works.
