licorice is a flavor. Licorice and anise are the same flavor but different plants. Licorice root and anise seeds provide the same flavor.

Licorice plant is a member of the pea family and gets is gets its sweetness from the compound glychyrrhizin; anise and fennel are members of the carrot family and get their flavor from anethole, which is also present in licorice. Anise is used as a flavor ingredient in licorice candy, and gives it its distinctive taste - by itself glychyrrhzin is more sweet than anything else, but it lingers in the mouth longer than plain sugar.
