Hi FRiends, Boy do I need someone to talk to.
Just came back from dropping off my daughter at college and the empty house is making me cry so much.
Been a member since 2004. This is my first post. So sorry but I can't stop feeling sad and hurting inside because I miss her so much.
I respect you all so much and value your comments. Some are harsh, but most are honest and decent. So maybe I can drown my heart-ache reading your thoughts.
Sincerely, bicyclerepair--Ft. Lauderdale
Maybe we need a “Kids Away at College” thread.
Hey there .... been through this myself and it’s brutally hard. I’m not going to kid you. Every single August is hard and has been hard for a while.
My best advice is to accept and acknowledge your loss - and it IS a loss. Your former life is truly gone and to deny that gives it a dis-service. Give yourself a chance to be sad for a few days, then start focusing on your new life - the one where YOU are the star of the show, where YOU get to decide what to do with your time rather than be at the whims of another.
Next summer will be awesome fun when your house fills up again, but you will probably notice a bit of eagerness to get back to you. Every year I’m happy to see them come home, but then if I’m honest, I’m happy to have the house back to myself, even though there is some sadness to see them go.
Very, very soon will be the time for you to embrace a new project and you will figure out you are no longer just a parent, but a person with your own identity.
But for tonight, do not cry because it is over, smile because it happened.
God’s love to you
When she brings home the first load of wash and needs money it’ll be as if she never left.
Thank you SoftballMominVA.
Thank you FReepers too. You all are such a treasure in my life.
Wait until she comes home with 6 weeks of laundry and expects you to do it! lol
It's not that I don't like my kids or want to be rid of them, but I feel I've failed as a parent if they don't leave the nest and set down roots of their own someplace else. In fact, one of my biggest nightmares is having my 30-something year old kids still living with me. That is a horror I hope I never have to contemplate.
That all said, they are always welcome back for Christmas, birthdays and barbeques.
Red bus leaves from Orlando airport.
She has no car and the city bus takes over 2hrs and 3 bus exchanges to get from UCF to OIA.
Holy cow! Leave it to the government to take 3 hours to go 20 miles.
