"Most of us don’t spend much time listening to vinyl anymore, but just like that DJ spinning records in a trendy nightclub, there was a time when you could cue up some 45s in your Chrysler. In 1956, you could get an optional record player in Chrysler, DeSoto, Dodge and Plymouth vehicles......Years ago, automakers used to hide gas caps in stealthy locations. Cars like the ’56 Chevy Bel Air had the gas cap hidden behind a taillight, which would swivel out of the way, while numerous cars from the 60’s and 70’s had their fuel fillers located behind the license plate.

"I wanna peanut butter and jelly sandwich". LOL

Jean Shepherd wrote of the trips his family took. He wrote Christmas Story and Ollie Hopnoodles Haven of bliss. The movies were good but the written version was much more realistic for the time and place. I think his books Wanda Hickey's night of golden memories or In God we trust all others pay cash have those stories in them. LOL.

I do recall some very tense nights going from Tennessee to upstate Indiana when I was about four years old or so. The gas line froze up on our old 55 Plymouth wagon. Heck I later learned how to drive in that thing. All of our trips were in a station wagon till 1971 when dad finally could afford a new pick up. We drove the truck up to Fairbanks and back.

Willys Jeeps had throttle knobs too for running accessories using a rear wheel drive. On at least one I remember there was a warning label saying never use as cruise control.

“Very convenient, didn’t have to worry which side of the pump to pull into.”

On the gas gauge of my SUV there’s a little arrow pointing to which side the filler is on. Not like you fill up so infrequently that you’d forget...

When I was a youngster, the big accessory was the Audiovox FM converter, that could add FM to the car's AM radio

They were mounted underdash or sometimes in the glove-box.

Who had the “brilliant” idea to start putting the gas fill on the RH side of the car?

I could maybe give the Japs a pass since they drive on the “wrong” side of the road, but now American cars are starting to do it too. It really defies any sort of sense.

Makes gas pumps a royal PITA when these cars are in the mix, especially if there’s any sort of a line.

You have a BMW R71 Ural? Rocket 3 guy here. How do you like it? They look like fun.

Shhh!!

In Soviet Union, Ural copy you!

I have a 2006 Ural Patrol. I like it a lot. The kids love being hack monkeys, especially my youngest.

Riding a hack is never dull, with assymetric braking, acceleration, everything. It gets lots of attention, but the Harley guys still only rarely wave.

Only downside is top speed is geared toward leisurely secondary roads rather than freeway riding. I've had it to 65 mph, but it's much happier toodling at 55 mph. Also, Russian steel would rust if I didn't keep it in the garage.

It helps being mechanically minded, with all the gadgets on it, parking brake, reverse, two-wheel drive. Nothing's broken on it yet, but things need to stay adjusted.

One of the shop leads at my work is a Triumph guy. Has a 675 Street Triple and a Rocket. If I were him, I'd get a nice Bonneville and cover all my moods.

You could get FM converters which would plug into your 8-track player’s slot.

In this wonderful accessory for your electric Volt, you get a Marxist-Racist-Homosexual-Muslim-Community Organizer who automatically chants "You didn't build that, somebody else made that happen!" as you pull into your home driveway.

“Memories of El Monte”

I think I got to this site, which is where I found the quote

http://www.elmontelegionstadium.com/history.html

by googling “Grunion Run” and finding a picture of Frank Zappa. Who I didn’t previously associate with the song.

I bet it was nicely gimbaled and that in those big roadsters with high end suspensions it was like riding on air. But yeah, that was probably all good on a smooth road, which there weren’t all that many of in the 30s, and so, you don’t see that one taking off.

Why did Dems buy Fords back in the day?

I don't know that they did. That's just what I was told when I was a little kid and I believed it. Ford owners probably ate weird food and spoke with some sneaky accent, too. ;-)))
