The New Normal
August 27, 2012
A pastor, who was trained in trauma and grief counseling, commented that the greatest challenge for people who are hurting is often not the immediate heartache of the loss. Instead, the biggest problem is adjusting to the different kind of life that follows. What once was normal may never be normal again. So the challenge for those offering help is to assist the sufferers as they establish the new normal. It may be a new normal that no longer includes robust health, a treasured relationship, or a satisfying job. Or it may be living without a loved one who has been taken in death. The gravity of such losses forces us to live a different kind of lifeno matter how unwelcome it may be.
When our new normal comes, its easy to think no one understands how we feel. But that isnt true. Part of the reason Jesus came was to experience life among us, resulting in His present ministry: For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin (Heb. 4:15).
Our Savior lived a perfect life, yet He also knew the pains of a broken world. He endured sorrow; He suffered agony. And He stands ready to encourage us when the dark moments of life force us to embrace a new normal.
Father, thank You that in the darkest seasons of life, You
will never abandon us. Guide us with Your never-failing
presence through both the welcome and unwelcome changes
of life. In Jesus name, amen.
In our desert of grief, Jesus can provide an oasis of hope.

Where is everyone? Here is something I received via e-mail. It reminded me of why I love my adopted state.
We loan a hammer, or a cup of sugar. We don't take two-hour lunches, but we do spend a few minutes each day with a cup of coffee with our feet upon our desk, just shooting the breeze. We rarely get in a hurry. We have relatives just down the street. We don't just loan someone a socket wrench, we help them fix their car.
We share recipes, and gardening tips, and our last cup of coffee. We baby-sit each other's kids, we house sit each other's dogs while we're on vacation and we loan each other our cars if we have to get to the drugstore. We ask each other if we need anything as we're going to the market.
We celebrate each others accomplishments, we cry over each other's disappointments and pray for our neighbors and their problems. We are a friendly folk. We are West Virginians . We believe our state is "Almost Heaven" too. Mountaineers are always free! Free to take the time to enjoy life and hold precious moments in our hearts, forever.
Do you think our state to be kinda odd, then just stay where you are or pass us by. If this sounds like a place you'd like to visit, then drop in anytime and see for yourself. You'll be glad you did.

Serve Well With Joy
August 28, 2012
Nine years ago today a good friend went out for a lunchtime jog and never came back. Kurt De Haan, who was the managing editor of Our Daily Bread, died of a heart attack on that sunny Thursday. Some of us who worked with Kurt still keep mementos of him in our offices.
For instance, on one wall of my cubicle, I display the last memo I received from Kurt. It reminds me of his thoroughness as an editorstriving to represent Gods Word accurately and well. Another co-worker displays the last paper wad Kurt threw in her direction, reminding her of his eagerness to enjoy life.
Each time we talk about Kurt and how much we miss him, we discuss his combination of a quest for excellence mixed with an enjoyable personality. He worked hard and loved life. He strove to teach Gods Word with integrity while living his life with joy.
Remembering Kurt and his example is refreshing and challenging. It reminds us that others are watching us and can tell if were serving the Lord with gladness (Ps. 100:2), and if our love for Jesus is coming through in our good works (Eph. 2:10). Serve well. Serve with joy. Does that describe our work for the Savior?
Help me, dear Jesus, to live out the joy
and peace Youve given to me. May those who work
with and know me see that joy. And may I always
stand for truth and righteousness.
For joy that will last, always put Christ first.

HAPPY TUESDAY TO AMYS PLACE!

W. Eugene Smith - The Walk to Paradise Garden
You Are The New Day The Kings Singers (Click)
May You Approach Each New Day With The Innocence, The Sense Of Wonder And The Optimism Of These Two Children!
There is a story behind this picture:
Always known as a photographer who would take almost any chance if it meant getting the picture, Gene Smiths good luck throughout the Pacific deserted him on May 23, 1945. While on the east coast of Okinawa photographing an essay titled "A Day in the Life of a Front Line Soldier," he was seriously wounded by a Japanese shell fragment. The missile hit him in the head cutting both cheeks, injuring his tongue and knocking out several teeth. Characteristically, he was taking pictures at the time and the fragment passed through his left hand before entering his cheek just below the eye and near the nose. His comment in the hospital later: "I forgot to duck but I got a wonderful shot of those who did... my policy of standing up when the others are down finally caught up with me."
Ernie Pyle, another great war correspondent, who was on Okinawa with Smith and was not so lucky, wrote of him, "Gene Smith is an idealist, trying to do great good with his work but it will either break him or kill him."
Smiths war wounds cost him two painful years of hospitalization and plastic surgery. During these years he took no pictures and whether he would ever be able to return to photography was doubtful. Then one day, during his period of convalescence, Smith took a walk with his two children and even though it was still intensely painful for him to operate a camera, came back with one of the most famous photographs of all time: "A Walk to Paradise Garden." This memorable image was to serve as the final picture in the famous "Family of Man" Exhibition.
