The TACA had to make an emergency landing after hail and heavy precipitation disabled the engines in May 1988. The pilots were preparing to ditch in the water, but took an opportunity to land on the nearby grass strip of the levee instead. Boeing was assisting in the retrieval of the aircraft with the intention of removing the wings and putting the aircraft on a barge for unloading at NEW, but changed their minds after inspecting the aircraft.
