I always thought the difference it that Diet Coke uses aspartame for the sweetner and Coke Zero uses Splenda. Am I wrong?

Yup. Check the ingredients lists I posted for both. Aspartame in both. There are versions of Diet Coke with Splenda, prominently marked so. Coke is always last to the party with expensive alternative sweeteners. Royal Crown is often first, Pepsi second, and Coke last. For instance, in the early '80s when Nutrasweet/Aspartame was stil under patent, the brand new Diet Coke had saccharin, until Diet Squirt, Diet Rite, RC100, and then Diet Pepsi went 100% Nutrasweet, while Coke was still paying ith a Nutrasweet/Saccharin combination. FYI: fountain sodas (Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi) often STILL have saccharin in them. No labels in the restaurants. That's why the fountain diet drinks taste different (they also need a different CO2 pressure than regular soda).
