Strike Two: you obviously don't know the meaning of the word "geek".
Strike Three: you obviously not only do not read widely in general science (Issac Asimov, for example), but you don't read science fiction. When I was 10 years old I knew the basics of the answer to your question and not because I'm any kind of "geek" but because I read a lot of science fiction. You can't read science fiction and not be interested in finding out as quickly as you can answers to the kind of general questions you posted here.
When you strike out on FR, be prepared for the jeering. That's just the way it is. Sorry.
