Juanita Wallace, the president of the NAACP Dallas Chapter: Its the poor people, the uneducated people who spend the most money on the Lottery and its not going for [them] the way they thought it was going to go,

The dam lottery is prejudiced. We need Quotas to make it fair.
Another name for state run lotteries is “The Stupid Tax.” However, unlike Obamacare, it’s completely voluntary.

Gambling is a business that the government ought to be policing, not running.
The state of Kansas actually runs the non-Indian casinos in the state, and they also "partner" with the liquor stores, and have some of the very dumbest laws ever. For instance, a liquor store is banned, by law, from selling anything other than liquor. Meaning you can't buy a soda, or mixer, or a lemon or lime, or salt, or a shot glass, or swizzle-sticks, or a cork-screw at a liquor store. So every liquor store that wants to sell any accessories must have a separate store, complete with a separate entrance and registers, to sell them.

Lotteries are a tax on those who don’t understand statistics
“Lotteries are a tax on those who dont understand statistics.”
Lotteries are a tax on those who don’t understand probability. Statistics have nothing to do with it.
If it’s a choice between doing people a favor without them knowing, or trying to teach them to be smarter, I will always choose the former option.
I think of lottery tickets as much like the good old days of sharecropping. Landowners would dutifully obey the law at the end of the harvest, and offer their sharecroppers a legal bank check of the full amount they were owed, typically around $200. But then they would bring out an old hat filled with shiny nickels and offer that to the sharecroppers in lieu of that dull looking piece of paper with scribbles on it.
Invariably they would choose the old hat.
Math is raaaacis.
My boss told me that once. I said the odds were infinitely better than getting rich working for him.
Indeed. Then too is the argument against governments running 1 dollar casinos.
That is precisely what my husband said many years ago lol!
Precisely!
Sounds good to me. I hate being excluded.
Wholehearted agreement!
My concern is that you might be correct.
I don’t understand it either.
By the same ahem logic, they should stop selling snack food because the fattest percentage of the public is the bottom third in income.
“...lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math.” Exactly what my husband has said all along.
I’ve been reading Thomas Sowell’s book (”Black Rednecks and White Liberals”) and he elucidated the facts about the superior schools with a majority of black pupils in Washington D.C. I only studied probability as a postgrad. We need more mentors for our kids.
Thank you for teaching!
There was a series on TV named “Timecop” about a person from the future who travelled back in time to apprehend criminals. He stated that junk food was outlawed in 2025. A complete nightmare!
