...after the fall of California

If Nancy Pelosi and the Sierra Club have their way and they divert any more water from the Central Valley, that will happen sooner than later.

You’re welcome SG.

I hope JaDB is OK too.

Ugh! is right. Ugly little devils. I saw a few of those in my garden last year, and I thought they were after the squash, or the broccoli. I forget which.

But, they are not any nastier than Pelousey! I want to throw something every time I see her on TV claiming that this is a PENaltee — not a tax.

My tomato plants from Lowe’s are failing this year.

Looks like I’ll have to hit the farmer’s market for decent tomatoes.

NEVER buy that crap from a box store...even people selling on Craig's List have better tomatoes than those dumps.

Thanks for the tip.

Next year I will buy my plants from the Amish farmers at the market.

I want to throw something every time I see her on TV claiming that this is a PENaltee — not a tax.

Do your blood pressure a favor and get rid of the TV. I've been without one for several years and it's the best investment in my sanity that I ever made.

This thread is not thye same this year without pictures from your garden. I hope that you will be able get out in the dirt next season. And I pray that your mom is okay.

Thank you. My mom is hanging in there, but I wouldn't say she's OK.

This is extremely hard on her because she is used to being in charge of everything, and she just feels helpless. I just received a note from her that made me want to cry She had a followup appointment with her surgeon (whom she'd been berating behind his back for not visiting her) and she said "He talked to me!! Unusual!" I guess her other doctors don't talk to her -- they just talk AT her.

In truth, she is hard to talk to because she does not hear well.

Interesting article about why modern tomatoes are tasteless

“Flavor Is Price of Scarlet Hue of Tomatoes, Study Finds”

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/29/science/flavor-is-the-price-of-tomatoes-scarlet-hue-geneticists-say.html?_r=1&partner=MYWAY&ei=5065

Basically they have a gene that makes them uniformly red. The same gene lowers their sugar and carotenoids.

But if you plant heirlooms that gene is not present.

Anyone have any tips why my zucchini are only putting out male flowers for a month? Lots of flowers not a single zucchini.

Heat has a tendancy to cause squash to put out more male flowers. Some folks on this thread have had success putting up shadecloth over their plants so that it cuts down on the mid-day sun, but not enough to starve them of sunlight in the morning or evenings. That might be something to try. When the weather cools down a bit your plants should start producing female flowers again. In the mean time, those blossoms are edible, too.

Thanks. It has been hot for NY but not as bad as some on this thread are describing.

I just got fed up today and pulled a couple of plants. I thought maybe they were too crowded.

My cukes and tomatoes are doing fine.
