He sees Jesus as a “historical figure” but not the way to salvation.

In that he's not so different from a lot of "mainstream Protestants" and "cafeteria Catholics."

He also sees the black church community as vital to any success as a black politician in AmeriKKKa.

True. It's not clear that he actually believes in Black Liberation Theology, though he did sit through a lot of Wright's sermons

I have not read his book, but if I recall what I’ve read excerpts from, there may be a passage that he knew he would have to join a black church to be effective as a community organizer.

If Republicans are going to be asked religious questions at the debates (and they were on subjects like “honoring your husband”, “evolution vs. creationism”, etc.) then it is FAIR GAME to ask Barack Obama if he believes that (A) Jesus walked among men after His crucifixion and (B) Jesus is the ONLY way to salvation.

A lot of “go along to get along” people would have to acknowledge this man is not a Christian (without even having to ask for his baptism certificate).
