Of course it matters what people think they have seen, especially when there may be no opportunity to correct their perception.
Just look at what is going on with this picture.
It does matter of course, what the reality is. But in imagery perception is crucial, and as the meme goes, what has been seen cannot be unseen. So the perception of gross impropriety should be avoided. Publications are supposed to be proofed before publishing, and it shouldn’t have been difficult to avoid this whole thing.
