Clear Channel has agreed to purchase Alternative 101.7 WFNX Boston for an undisclosed price.
The station which had been co-owned with the Boston Phoenix newspaper has carried an Alternative Rock format since April 1983. It will now join a Clear Channel cluster of Talk 1200 WKOX/1430 WXKS, Rhythmic CHR Jamn 94.5 WJMN, and CHR Kiss 108 WXKS-FM. Owner Stephen Mindich released the following memo to the Phoenix regarding the sale:
"Dear Members of the PM/CG Family:
Because this is an emotional announcement to make, let me cut right to the chase.
This morning I met with the staff of WFNX to announce the pending sale of the station to Clear Channel Communications.
Over the years, WFNX has done spectacular things. Since 1983 the station has played an historic role in bringing new music to audiences in and around Boston. We introduced Nirvana and Pearl Jam to wider audiences in 1991.
1200AM can be very spotty in MA as well.
If a move to FM did happen, especially with Howie, that would be fantastic!!!
It would though as I surf the web now on Twitter, Facebook, and messageboards the speculation is adult contemporary or hot AC (going after WMJX’s female audience?) or Spanish, etc.
107.9 HD 2 carries Talk 1200 but you need an HD radio and to be close enough to Boston to get it (as low as $40 for a portable)
thanks—will read a bit later and link on radio board. Bob did a show called Let’s Talk About Radio which aired on Sun mornings...he also owns WJTO 730 up in Bath ME, same thing.
No ads, takes donations, and says things on air like “Cut up your credit cards. Most of the companies are evil.”
WXRV 92.5 The River (licensed to Haverhill and antenna in same city) is independently owned, indeed. Beanpot License Inc. according to Radio-locator.
WBOS 92.9 Boston may play similar music to WFNX too. They’re owned by Greater Media (also WTKK talk, WKLB country,
WMJX adult contemp., WROR classic hits)
thx rr
I’ve started a new commute and have become quite frustrated in the morning. My old standby of WBOS changed its format to depressing grunge and its dial neighbor at 92.5 (The River) has lost it, too.
Ideally, I loke a mixture of old and new. I was listening to 104.5 this morning and they had the right mix, but too much talking. In fact, all across the dial, chummy conversations are taking up more minutes than the music itself.
For right now, I am doing 103.3, which is a little too disco for me, but has limited talking. Any suggestions for me?
It’ll be interesting to see how it settles out.
Yes. There is talk of Spanish language talk format (si...);
adult contemporary, and one Boston Biz Journal article says an unnamed Clear Channel source told them it could be Spanish talk or...country.
Yes.
And for those saying country don’t play here...the only country station in town, WKLB 102.5, just came in SECOND
in the 6 and over ratings. Second. Maybe watered down,
adult contemporary flavored country, but it’s #2 among all
the stations!
Sometimes college radio (usually to the left of 92 MHz). Old and new mixed? May be tough to find.
Satellite radio can give you variety (costs about $40 or so,
then maybe $15/month) or HD radio (one time cost, unless your car stereo already has it...stations devoted to Irish,
hits of the 70s, smooth jazz, etc. And 107.9 WXKS-FM has
Talk 1200 on its HD 2)
But you said music...
Oh, bueno!
No puedo esperar para una estación de radio en español! Instrucciones para aplicaciones de tarjetas EBT se puede transmitten 24x7!
YAY!
-—Howie has been very, very boldly talking about leaving for the past several months now...he must have something signed and ready to roll.——
I’m guessing 96.9
He’s talked a lot about a dinner he had with fellow Herald writer and 96.9-talker, Michael Graham.
Is Reese still in jail? Was he ever tried? I haven’t heard anything about the case, do you know?
96.9 seems to me the most logical spot.
Yes and his contract with RKO could well be up at the end of Sept., judging by what happened in 07.
I heard, probably on Free Republic, that the girl was goaded into making the rape charges by a politically active friend of her mother. Story seems to be inconsistent with certain known facts, but authorities usually chase even the flimsiest rape allegations, especially against political conservatives. He may have been Nifonged.

Rape allegation
On October 22, 2008, a week after being let go by WRKO, Hopkins was arrested at his Malden, Massachusetts home on a fugitive from justice charge. It is alleged that Hopkins raped a 12-year-old girl some four years earlier. He waived extradition to New York City where he was charged with two counts of rape. One in the first degree, one in the second degree and one charge of endangering the welfare of a child.[6]
In a statement to the press, Hopkins denied the charges stating:
She charged me on Oct. 1 of 2004. I was living in Manchester, Connecticut. I couldnt have been there.[7]
Not being able to make bail of $100,000 cash or $300,000 bond, Hopkins was held at Rikers Island for 2-1/2 years. In November 2009, he was offered a deal of time served if he plead guilty to a lower sexual offense and register as a sex offender. Hopkins professed his innocence and turned the deal down. He was finally put on trial March 2, 2011 when jury selection began. During the trial, Hopkins’ accuser changed her story and the investigating detective was cut from the witness list. The trial ended in a mistrial on March 24, 2011 after two days of deliberation when eight of the jurors voted not guilty on all charges, and all but one juror voted not guilty on the most serious charge of child rape. Hopkins was finally freed on bail April 6, 2011 after bail was dropped to $20,000.[8] The prosecutor promised to file for a re-trial, however the arrest of Hopkin’s accuser on a gun charge has muddied the case and a re-trial has not been filed.[9]
Once in awhile we hear updates. He may be out on bail and still awaiting trial.
Let’s see, just found this

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of my loyal followers for checking out the site for one full year.
After my release, I started this site to update those of you who have wanted to be updated on my case as it progressed. Well, Its been over a year now and nothing much is happening. As I told you all, my accuser has refused to testify at a new trial and has hired a lawyer to bar her from even meeting with the DAs office. Now the DA is mounting an effort to have a new trial with only the transcript submitted to a new jury.
Its unconscionable for my accuser to believe that it is okay to uproot my entire life, accusing me of something she knows I never did and would never do and then bow out when it was convenient.
I dont know if this will ever end and Ill return to a semblance of normal life but I wish to thank you all for your support and reminders to keep my head up. I will.
Please remember, you can always check me out on facebook.com/reeseontheradio or an Twitter @reeseonradio
Yep...
I listen to talk in the afternoon. Getting to work, I need soothing music to prep me for the upcoming day.
The last couple of days, they have been doing Hannity in place of Jay Severin. I have tried Severin a couple of times, but he seems so pedantic and humorless. I wish the Hannity switch were permanent, though I never like the parts where he “debates” left wing looneys. Too much anger and emotion in those encounters.
Big layoffs at rock station WFNX as its sold to Clear Channel:
Blame Bush!!!
