dictionaries ad nauseam | 10 May 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

obtest \ob-TEST\ , verb
1. To supplicate earnestly; beseech.
2. To invoke as witness.
3. To protest.
4. To make supplication; beseech.

Example sentences:
I constrain, adjure, obtest and strongly command you.
-- Sir Walter Scott, Guy Mannering

And whosoever she be, even with the form of words which to miserable wretches is granted most exaudible, I pray, and do with those prayers most heartily obtest, which are in the ears of the hearers of them most effectual, that she may never taste of such bitter miseries.
-- Giovanni Boccaccio, Amorous Fiametta

Etymology:
Obtest comes from the Latin roots ob-, a prefix meaning "toward", and the root test, meaning "witness."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

It brings to mind again those public venues where a fawning sycophant would Obtest the One for a house, or a job, or a piece of his “ stash”...

Knew that. The spouse was listening to NPR yesterday and learned that Blossom really does have a PhD in Neuroscience. Who knew?

He is Bill Nye The Actor! Go check out his wikipedia page. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, which is fine, but was working as an ACTOR when he started the science Ed stuff. He is as much a scientist as I am. He has no freaking credentials, and I bet he has read far fewer geology books than I have, becuase if he had, he would never believe in AGW. (once you get a sense of how looooooong geological time is compared,to the end of the last ice age, you say, oh snap! that was just yesterday, and wonder, gee, what caused the earth to warm up so quickly that the MILE of ice on top of Central Park melted?)
