Walk Away From Worry

May 3, 2012

A few years ago, our Bible-study leader challenged us to memorize a chapter of the Bible and recite it to the group. Internally, I began to protest and groan. An entire chapter, in front of everyone? Memorization had never been my thing; I cringed as I imagined long silences while everyone watched me, waiting for the next words.

A few days later, I reluctantly leafed through my Bible, looking for a set of verses to learn by heart. Nothing seemed right until I landed in Philippians 4.

I read this verse in silence, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God” (v.6). That’s when I knew which chapter to memorize, and how to walk away from my anxiety about the assignment.

God does not want us to agonize over future events, because worry paralyzes our prayer life. The apostle Paul reminds us that instead of fretting, we should ask God for help. When we continually take this approach to anxiety, God’s peace will guard our hearts and minds (v.7).

Someone once said tongue-in-cheek, “Why pray when you can worry?” The point is clear: Worry gets us nowhere, but prayer gets us in touch with the One who can handle all of our concerns.

When you feel the tension mounting,
And across the busy day,
Only gloomy clouds are drifting
As you start to worry—pray! —Anon.
It’s impossible to wring our hands when they are folded before God in prayer.

Read: Philippians 4:1-9

Be anxious for nothing. —Philippians 4:6
Bible in a Year:
2 Chronicles 33-36

Good morning, Rus.
Excellent lesson for a born worrier! Thank you for this timely ODB.

Wishing you a worry-free day.

Recently I questioned one of my Sunday School members on a previous acquaintance, that was a regular programmer on a local Television station (God's Learning Channel) GLC, ... as I contribute to this programmer. The programmer, (Faye) was dropped abruptly last year for coming out in support of the preacher in Florida that threatened to burn a Koran, and no longer is on their station. (The reason given by GLC was fear of retribution of an Islamic).

Now this programmer is wanting to move to Washington DC and be based there with the purpose of confronting the members of Congress, etc., in regard to their allowing the changes our President has made and is making, the waste of monies, and the ignoring the United States Constitution.. Having prayer walks around the Congressional buildings, etc. She has been great at getting to the truth about the intentions to change our government. “ To be” where the action is. Faye is good at calling a spade a spade and is Christian based. I was inquiring as to her character off screen; behind the scenes, which was declined because it has been a few years since this SS member worked there.
the way the station does their programing is the programmers fly in and record a dozen or less programs; and then they are presented a new program every week to the viewers. The station flies them in, pays for their motels has them ( him or her) 'live' on air a couple of times and probably pays for the food.

The only information the SS member did give me was how Faye did not like the car that picked her up and/or the woman that picked her up, she wanted better. No other details. Amazing how disingenuous some people are.
So do I help a person that is self centered or ignore that for the fact she is based in Christianity and willing to to take the message face to face to Washington? She is on several radio stations now. I do not receive her radio show in this market. Her program is ...
“Insight” USA. She lives in Florida, now.

Worry is part of this for me.

Pray and drop the worry.
