In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
riposte or ripost (ri-POST) noun: 1. A quick, clever reply.
2. In fencing, a quick return thrust.
verb tr.: To make a quick, clever reply.
verb intr.: In fencing, to make a quick return thrust.
Example sentence:
"Asked about the situation, Rodriguez delivered a particularly pointed riposte that embodied his mature response to the entire situation."
---Sam Borden; Kansas State Sets Up Melting Pot; The New York Times; Mar 16, 2012.
Etymology:
From obsolete French risposte (response), from Italian risposta (response), from Latin respondere (to respond), from re- (back) + spondere (to pledge). Ultimately from the Indo-European root spend- (to make an offering or perform a rite), which is also the source of sponsor, spouse, espouse, and respond. Earliest documented use: 1707.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
My friend Paula, the MD, is currently at a medical conference in Orlando. She just emailed me that a guy who went to Kiski with us, is speaking at one of the programs there, he’s apparently an ortho. I had forgotten he went to U of Penn med school with her, but she said she went up to talk to him and they were in this group of high brow docs and he said, yeah, we were the only two Pollacks in the class at Penn! She said there is just something about being from Western PA, you never forget your roots no matter where you end up and what you accomplish, only someone from home would have brought up the whole pollack thing.
yes, caps fans were pleased he finally did something and said oh so now GMGM looks like a genius for going after him.
I knew nothing of this until yesterday when I read Kurt from Big Hollywood’s epic column on it.
I just thought that was a Greg Gutfeld joke.
The way he abuses Dana Perino on Twitter and the show, I wouldn’t be surprised if she just blows up at him some day.
Plus, you get 2 more weeks of hockey anxiety. We’re all relaxed and enjoying spring here.
i had seen it on Twitter pretty much as soon as it happened. Holtby has more chops than either Vokoun or Neuvirth, not sure either of them could have pulled off the series win.
You know i have seen his tweets about her and it strikes me as odd. he’s carrying on about her much as an 11 yo boy with a serious crush would. I am pretty sure he’s married though she is not. I haven’t seen the Five in a while, is he equally obsessed with her on the show?
Not equally obsessed, but yes he does tease her at times. If she had pigtails, he’d dip them in the inkwell. If they had an inkwell.
With Buffalo already out, and rooting against the Bruins done (except vs Thomas), I’m all in for the Preds & the Goose going forward
If I had my druthers, I’d re-sort in the second round by points, which would have meant a home start for you instead. It’s weird in the East that we might end up with Florida as the “top seed”.
Speaking of TT, I had to shake my head at the tenor of some of the comments in the discussion forums after the BOS-WAS game last night:
- “That’s what he gets for not visiting the White House!”
- “Black man scores winning OT goal, knocks out Tim Thomas.”
- “Washington, DC (Obama) over Boston, MA (Romney) in a tight contest — a view of things to come.”
C’mon people, get a life!
no anxiety at all. they weren’t even expected to make the playoffs with as crappy as they played this season and somehow managed to sneak in, this is all gravy.
that’s exactly what i have been seeing and it is pi$$ing me off something fierce!
bc he literally tweets about NOTHING ELSE BUT HER, it strikes me as odd. i have followed him since i started on twitter and this is recent.
If Obama is going to pretend to watch hockey, and people are going to imbue it with so much meaning, then the Capitals will have to lose. Eventually. They can beat the Flyers first, if it comes to that.
He is competing with her for followers on Twitter. Plus she’s the only female on the show that isn’t taller than him so he likes her.
Speaking of hockey, our GM David Poile, Captain Shea Weber, and goalie Pekka Rinne are all finalists again this year. I hope Trotzy gets nominated and wins this year for coach.
I’m pretty sure she’s married to an older dude. She’s mentioned being a step grandma on twitter before.
really? wow, i had not heard that.

This mentions a husband from the UK, with no mention of divorce.
I just hope to God that he doesn’t set foot in the Verizon Center for a Caps game. It galls the living HELL outta Leonsis that no matter how much $ her pours into obama’s coffers and begs and pleads, he never graces a Caps game with his presence. Let’s keep it that way. Beating the Flyers seems a bit far-fetched, though Bryz is certainly beatable. You can bet your behind i would be down at the Flyers end for warmups to get a closeup view of the gingeroux though, if it came to that!
