The CTRL + scroll does work as a temporary fix simply by zooming in on the Your Reply box. Should have thought of that. I have to zoom out to Preview but it beats posting when you have only a 78.42% guess as to what you wrote.
I'd tried the zoom techniques using the touchpad in Lion - and they don't work once you've highlighted the Your Reply box.
