Stumped by mysterious illnesses in at least 600 dogs in the U.S., federal health officials have turned to consumers for help investigating problems possibly tied to chicken jerky pet treats made in China.

A log of complaints collected from pet owners and veterinarians contains references to at least three popular brands of jerky treats that may be associated with kidney failure and other serious ailments, according to internal Food and Drug Administration documents obtained by msnbc.com.

Of 22 “Priority 1” cases listed by the FDA late last year, 13 cited Waggin’ Train or Canyon Creek Ranch jerky treats or tenders, both produced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co., the records show.

More Chinese crap products sold in the US?

That’s ok. We send to them our crap currency. Even Stevens, in my book.

I told Giant to take this Made in China crap off the shelves 2 months ago, but it’s still there.

It would be nice if the “American Association of Pet Food Manufacturers” or what ever the trade group is called would voluntarily stop using ingredients made in China.

But since that apparently isn’t going to happen, and since pet food tainted by products made in China have been responsible for numerous pet deaths, and since China apparently doesn’t give a damn about the problem, perhaps legislation prohibiting pet food manufacturers from using any ingredients from China is in order.

I hate unnecessary legislation as much as the next FReeper, but maybe it’s time.

Do you use the crushed fresh garlic in the little flat jars when you cook? It is hard to find one of those that wasn’t made in China.

Nope, I always crush from fresh cloves and never use the bottled stuff. There’s something satisfying about a hard thump of the hand against the side of a big knife or cleaver over a juicy clove of garlic. Takes about 30 seconds to crush and chop 3 or 4 cloves. And I do not buy “fresh” (garlic clusters are always hang dried before distribution) garlic that is labeled “Product of China”. There’s some of that out there and I don’t trust it.

I bought some “homemade” dried liver treats at the green market this weekend. But yeah, you can make your own pretty easily.

I don’t feed raw anymore (not for any particular reason, I just stopped and have not gone back to it). But when I did I fed raw chicken and various vegetables. All of my dogs (I had up to ten large dogs) did very well on that diet. AND they had lovely teeth. It’s important to never feed cooked chicken bones. I do remember I was very nervous about it when I first started tho. And one of my dogs did not think raw chicken was food and refused to eat it for a few days. She would eat all of the vegetables but eat around the chicken. After a few days she finally ate the chicken and decided it was fine.
I have heard about dogs choking on raw bones, but I also occasionally hear about dogs choking on other various objects. I mention that only because anything can happen. I don’t promote or not promote it. People should do what they are comfortable with. People should NOT eat raw chicken.
