I used to consider myself a dog person, but (over the years) I’ve had both.
Dogs are friendlier, more loyal, and better for guarding the home. But they are also needier, nosier and dirtier.
Cats are cleaner and quieter, but very independent—they will only pay attention to you when they damn well want to. And, yes, they are awesome at catching mice.
I currently have a dog, but feel guilty about it as I don’t (can’t) spend as much time with it as I should. As a result, I think its rather lonely.
My cat routinely protects us from scorpions in the house. When she catches mice, she takes them to the jacuzzi (stadium) where the games begin. (gotta close the drain or she loses them there)
Mainecoons are friendly and will "hang out" with you. Mine greets me at the door when I get home.
