1) Congrats to UND for standing firm against the PC idiocy of the NCAA. Looks like they wound up with a slap on the wrist.
2) The self-important, educated idiot from the NCAA who wrote the letter quoted verbatim in the article, sounds like he's only marginally literate.
3) How in the heck do you wind up with a title like "Executive Vice President of Membership and Student-Athlete Affairs/Chief Inclusion Officer", anyway? Hope that he doesn't get paid by the word.
Meh. When oil hit big in Texas, the only real sport they had to glom onto was High School Football. They seem to have survived. :-)
Do Native Americans have a say?
‘3) How in the heck do you wind up with a title like “Executive Vice President of Membership and Student-Athlete Affairs/Chief Inclusion Officer”, anyway? Hope that he doesn’t get paid by the word.’
Because calling him the “VP School Political Officer” would be a little too obvious!
Do Native Americans have a say?
ND should immediately adopt a Leprechaun as mascot
Perhaps Mr. Franklin should drop 'chief' from his title, especially when accusing others of being hateful or abusive against Indians.
So the NCAA is trying to force probably a few million to be spent on new unis, caps, hats, logos, building changes, and more... for a purpose that fails to serve education in any fundamental manner... oh, except (I forgot) the lesson in messing with political correctness.
Actually, they do... which is why the Florida State Seminoles get to keep their moniker. The Seminole tribe loves it.
The NCAA tried this same crap with the Seminoles a couple of years ago, and Florida State threatened to pull out of NCAA altogether (and thereby hold back the revenue). The NCAA quickly backed down and granted the Seminoles a waiver.
How about the “Lesbian Floating Turds.” Then pay some ad-hoc gay group $500 to endorse the name and fight anyone who objects!
I propose they change their name to the “Fornicating Flukes”
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
The biggest Sioux tribe in the state at Ft. Yates, initially tried to shake down UND for more stuff (minority scholarships, Indian studies programs, etc.) and were unsuccessful. These were former corrupt tribal leaders, not the rank and file Sioux. The corrupt tribal leadership was voted out en mass and the current non-corrupt tribal leadership has taken a supportive position similar to their cousins at Ft. Berthold.
This is the reason which UND decided to reinstate the nickname and logo now in defiance of NCAA authority.
So the NCAA feelgood wennies are taking an action in opposition to the actual Sioux Tribes in North Dakota. Notwithstanding that, you may still find a few of them who still support the former corrupt tribal leadership's attempt to extract free stuff from UND in return for the support which the rank and file have already given.
For you non-Dakotans, Ft. Yates is south of Bismarck almost to the South Dakota line and almost as far away from UND as you can get and still remain in North Dakota.
The total picture here is a lot more gloomy for them than your info reveals, as another poster points out.
This is far more than a slap on the wrist.
I understand FL ST got a waiver to keep theirs because the Seminole tribe loves the name and logo and insisted on it.
Otherwise, the schools are helpless.
In my area, a Div III school...soon to go Div II...McMurry University...was forced to change their name away from “Indians”. The process they used for name suggestions narrowed it down to three and the campus community chose the favorite. They are now the McMurry War Hawks.
I like the new name, but am repulsed by the NCAA’s overwhelming power and political correctness run amok.
McMurry is often in playoffs in several sports. It is a very big deal to them, and in order to avoid losing all of that potential, they caved.
The schools themselves created the NCAA and the NCAA turned around and dictated to the schools.
Exactly like what happened after the states created the federal government.
Pull a Prince and start calling themselves THE TEAM FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE FIGHTING SIOUX. Then use the old logo with an X across it.
The BIG fish, here, though is a guy named "Ralph Engelstadt" (sp?). He's a massive donor to their sports programs, the hockey arena is named for him, and so on.
He told the university a few years ago that the money spigot shuts off if they rename their team. That was more-or-less the end of the discussion.
Good for him, sez me.
Are they also going after the ND Fighting Irish? Didn’t think so.
SPOT ON!
Political Correctness is everywhere.
