Martha could have fought 5 years and still lost. She'd have that hanging over her everyday, and there is some serious anxiety involved .

She cut her losses.

Folks full bore into capitalism know that sometimes you have to do that to move ahead. Her magazine people were bright. They worked well without her. When she returned to work there it was ~ even better, and she was much more relaxed than she would have been.
