MIAMI (CBS4) A judge has ordered a top student at North Miami Senior High School to leave the country later this month.
The student has lived here since she was four. Now her classmates say they dont plan on letting her leave without a fight.
Daniela Pelaez, 18, has spent most of her life in the U.S. In fact, she says she cant remember her native country, Colombia.
Ive done everything that an American child has done. I know the National Anthem, I know more about the United States than I do about Colombia. This is my home, said Daniela.
Shes done so well at North Miami Senior High that shes now the valedictorian.
Yeah. I have a 6.7 GPA, said Daniela.
Even so, Daniela may have no other choice but to leave the U.S. at the end of the month. She was born in Colombia and came here with her parents when she was four.

Great, so if we follow your logic, not only do we have to deal with anchor babies, but anyone with a toddler would be encouraged to hop across the border too. Where’s the line? 5 years old too young? How about 10? Maybe 17?
No, throw ‘em all out. Let her come back in through the front door.
Honors/Advance Placement grades get bonuses, so an “A” is not worth just the standard 4 points. In High Schools, you have the elite kids who basically all take honors courses all day long with others like them and then you have the average and below-average Joes and Janes. It’s very segregated.
The more honors/advanced placement students a school can gather, the more dollars the school can collect from federal programs.
If those students make Ds and Fs in those weighted classes, no matter.
They will have fullfilled their financial function for the school staff, and the extra points in taking advanced classes make up for any below average students mediocre performances in them, so it all works out for the best total combined “averages” for the entire school.
And thus ensure employee bonuses.
My county had a really good program for the minority of exceptionally bright students, based on merit.
It is now being dismantled.
The best and brightest students had the opportunity to take free “dual enrollment classes” during high school, at our local community college.
They graduated from High School, and also acquired an Associates degree at the same time, based soley upon superior academic performance.
No race, income, religion or other “minority” set asides were involved by individual students qualifying for dual track enrollment.
So of course, it had to be stopped!
I’d still like to know what did she do , it reached the level of Judge orders her deported. This cannot be a typical case. She must have broken some serious laws especially in Miami which is more or less sanctuary city. After all is said and done, they will not be deporting her. They are seeking their 15 minutes of fame. Before family would allow her to be deported, they would arrange for her to flee. There has been to many other cases like this, where illegal was not deported and this wil be the case here.
Hush yo mouf - there are many rabid dogs on FR that will ask you if you understand "illegal" for that kind of crazy talk. They think the sins of the father should be visited on the child. I asked one guy if he thought a 4 year old who was taken to the store by his father should be punished if the father shoplifted - in order to make his point, he said yes.
The fact is that children all over the world live every day in circumstances which are good or bad, depending on choices their parents made. They live well sometimes because of their parents and they live badly sometimes because of them.
That’s life.
She happens to be one who was given many years of a good life in this country that she was never entitled to but received anyway, because her parents broke the law.
It’s time for her to pay the piper and go back to her country.
Unless you want to fix the circumstances of EVERY child who has misfortune because of their parents decisions?
Yeah, that kind of jumped out at me too.
What the heck is a 6.7 gpa?
6.7 GPA is what INFLATION does to us....
Rule of law. Deal with it. Si.
So long and have fun in your real country.
Sort of like being 5 foot eight inches tall in a village of pygmies.
Get out the Kleenex...
Boo-f**king-hoo!
How the hell is she getting a 6.7 GPA?
Amen!
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
Our government did nothing for 14 years and they want to do something now? If her parent/s were here illegally they should of done something before now. 78% her life was as an American hope she wins an appeal.
Well, I’m glad that we are a nation of laws, and not a nation ruled by your sympathies. If you are here illegally, you’re here illegally. Doesn’t matter one whit if you are able to evade the authorities for 1 day, 1 decade, or 1 century, you are still here illegally until you take the proper steps to change that status.
6.7 GPA means they simply can’t be using the standard grading that everyone else uses (unless that much has changed since I went to school!).
4.0-Straight A’s, 5.0 - Straight A’s in all Honors classes, 6.0 - Straight A’s in all AP classes. I don’t even think you could get a 6.0 though, since I’ve never heard of Honors or AP Phys Ed, which is usually required. So, to get a 6.7, there would have to be some other class above Advanced Placement that gave you 7 points for an A. What is that, Triple Secret Advanced Placement? Do you get Grad School credit for that?
