Instead of crossing your eyes, try staring through the computer screen as if you're focusing on the wall behind it, or even out the window. The farther away you focus, the more your eyes will move apart.
I can't do the cross-eyed way at all. My eyes will not settle down and relax crossed, but uncrossed works great for me. Good luck. Those vultures are kinda cute, LOL!
