ANYTHING > XP = does not compute.

You obviously did not read my post close enuf. It is for my Mom - she's 85 and comfortable with Win XP. BUT. XP has a drop-dead support date of June 2013 for XP.

The jump to Win 7 will be a bit of a stretch for her, BUT nothing like trying to get her comfortable with Linux or a Mac [which she has NEVER used] ...

If your mother is 85 and comfortable with XP there is no reason for her to shift. Even with the support cut off, XP is stable enough that it will be working on very many machines for her foreseeable future. Windows 7 is different enough to be irritating. If you are going to move her, move her to something free and that works, like Ubuntu. I don't recommend moving.

This is a bit off topic but I have an Acer laptop (not sure if that's what you are getting your mom?) and the one feature I hate is a "kill" switch to the wireless router connection. It's the top key on the upper left side (above the volume keys).

If you pick up the laptop and aren't careful where you put your hand, it stops your connection immediately. Very annoying. (my laptop is a coulple of years old so maybe they've corrected this.)
