Living farther out is not always a solution. We have property about an hour south of Houston several miles from a small town. Last week we lost a 4 wheeler and a big riding mower. We have security camera but the thieves shined lights into the lens and we got nothing. All we have lost is saddles in the past.
Were you home, was the house empty? Usually your vehicles and home interior lights are observed as “markers” of home occupancy. I would be tempted to do a little hunting over bait with a varmint rifle, with all vehicles out of sight, no lights inside, and a .243 sighted in on the bait in the yard.
