She got awards for doing what most of the other pop "stars" should do....sing.
Indeed!
When I was walking the dog this morning, I had an interesting thought about how Whitney’s death symbolizes a parallel in the story of Black music and culture in America.
Whitney was raised in church, and like other legendary R & B divas, learned her vocal technique and stylings from the Gospel Tradition. This served her beautifully in her early career, because, like Jazz and Blues, it is an authentic expression of the Black Contribution to American Culture.
The Hip-Hop/Rap/Gangsta influence which is pushed by the left-wing media, has permeated all aspects of our culture and entertainment. It is the background music for movies, news programs, TV shows, video games, documentaries and just about everything else. It has changed the definition of “R&B” so that the term no longer means “Rhythm and Blues”. It has trampled on all other forms of Black American Musical Expression and reduced such genres as “Soul”, “Motown”, “Jazz”, “Blues”, and even “Gospel” music as mere historical footnotes. Not only that, it has infiltrated our culture and coarsened it to the point where misogyny, vulgarity, violence, drug abuse, and racism are acceptable norms in the context of “entertainment”.
While Whitney did not express this “infiltration” in her music (like Mariah Carey did), she MARRIED into it. She embraced the Hip-Hop “culture” wholeheartedly by becoming addicted to crack cocaine, which destroyed her God-Given Gift.
I am a voice teacher, and I often am subjected to parents who want their girls to be “Stars”. They want me to train their little girls to sing in the current pop style, with all the vocal-fry, sexual sounds, nasal affectations, and growls and moans. I refuse. I lose customers. So what. I would rather starve than perpetuate that garbage.
REAL music will always reach to the heart, no matter what the media attempts to flood us with. Kids seek out their parents old vinyl records, PBS hosts specials on Aretha, Smokey, Sam Cooke, and Motown just to raise funds, and the “Classic Rock” FM Radio Stations are flourishing.
My Guitar students beg me to teach them Beatles, Rolling Stones, and led Zeppelin. They have no interest in current rock hits.
REAL music WILL win in the end. It HAS to!
