Gonna be having dinner with a Romney supporter this weekend. I know everything I need to know about "Bain Capital" and their way of skimming the cream off the top of failing companies, but I need all the information I can get.

Vetting Romney on his business dealings is communist? He’s running on that record but we shouldn’t look at it? Who else do you think shouldn’t be completely vetted?

That is not what he/you are trying to do. You are trying to attack him. Why don’t you go on record and say some good things about his business experience, to prove you are truly seeking a fair vetting? When I only hear bad, I hear lefty.

That is not what he/you are trying to do.

Oh yes it is and when there's discussion on something that isn't kosher the hysterics on FR start screaming, led by the MSM hysterics.

When I only hear bad, I hear lefty.

So only the left looks for ALL the facts and the right has to be "nice"?

Forget that. You go play nice. We have ONE shot at turning the country around and nice ain't in the play book! Finding the truth, despite the hysterics, is.

That’s a mighty odd definition of “vetting.” In this case, the conclusion has been made (”Romney is a heartless dude who made his fortune on other people’s misfortune”), and the poster is looking for facts to fit. I simply directed him to the best place to find them.

Romney is a dishonest politician and liar but he’s a stellar businessman? No. We already know about the Medicare scandal. You can bet your bippy there’s more!

“Romney is/was a great capitalist and your whole line of reasoning is disgusting.”

Was his vulture capitalism legal? Was his stripping assets, paying himself large dividends and loading up a company with enough debt to sink it legal.

SURE!!!!!

So are those scum sucking attorneys who advertise on TV...

Legal doesn’t make something desirable, good or admirable.

Bottom line: Romney legally enriched himself at the expense of others. It wasn’t about creating jobs.

Yes we can!!!! Sometimes you have to suspend conservatism to save conservatism, especially if it helps beat that evil, soulless Romney!

Sounds like a Faustian bargain to me. We should beat Romney with Conservatism, not give it up to beat him. If you do that, the principle becomes less important than the person. Candidates come and go, values are the only thing that should remain consistent.

If Romney wins the nomination I will sit this election out. I can’t vote for him. Of all the things Romney can be attacked on (guns, abortion, Romneycare, gay rights, taxes, government intrusion...) his work at Bain is the LEAST objectionable.

He was at the top of the capitalist food chain. He was a capitalist leopard preying on weak antelope retailers and engorging himself on old, arthritic water buffalo steel companies. He thinned the herds of failing companies and made the survivors stronger — yes, while engorging himself in profits. That is how capitalism works. It’s a jungle out there.

I don’t fault Romney for being a capitalist. It’s his one and only redeeming quality. I fault him for being another big government liberal. There is more than enough in his record as governor to go after.

Don’t play the liberals’ game and go after him for making money — legally — in the business world. Republicans should like free markets, no matter how messy they sometimes get. In the end, they work.

So the lying, unethical politician never lied or was unethical in business? I’m happy to say that I am not that naive. He cheated Medicare and the company had to pay the biggest fine ever and you think that’s okay? I don’t. I don’t think it’s okay that he dumped Damon just before the scandal broke either. But you keep pushing that he’s honest and those of us who know better will keep telling the truth.

Private equity firms have an alternative - central planners. You are launching a left wing attack on Romney. The same type of attack a commie would use.

Oh, I was being sarcastic. Just trying to capture the mentality of people who want to beat Romney so bad, they will do anything. I remember in 04 when Dems were running around screaming anyone but Bush, and they lost. They lost because they didnt have someone they wanted, they just knew who they hated. I dont think you win by pleading with people to vote against someone because of how “x” they are about something.

In many cases he broke up businesses and fired employees. Sometimes businesses were better off before Bain. Such is the nature of the business. As a trader, I make bad, stinky, money-losing trades all of the time. But my success is measured by the profit at the end of the year and not by a bad trade here and there. Same with Bain - they are great at what they do. Attacking them over a few deals shows a lack of understanding of what they do and how they do it.

Apparently, as part of the pump and dump scheme, the first step was to fire employees, the second step was to get Lehman to rate the stock a buy and the third step was getting huge loans pushing up the stock prices (but getting the company deep into debt). Once they exited the stock, the price collapsed.

Whoa, hold on cowboy. I’m not “pushing that he’s honest.” I am pushing the notion that he can be attacked in a principled manner, or not. You are free to choose your path.

I take it then you are fine with the statement above by another poster:Sometimes you have to suspend conservatism to save conservatism...

The problem here isn't what Mitt did, that can be addressed, it is that attack has gone way beyond Mitt to attack the entire Private Equity system in the United States. A free, legal, and moral business structure that has a role. Sometimes some, like the poster above who is fine 'suspending conservatism' is sounding little different than the Occupiers who attack 'Wall Street' in general for the corruption of a few and are willing (usually gladly) to take the entire system down instead of dealing with the individual problems. Mitt is the problem, not private equity.

Gotcha, sorry about that. Sadly, I’ve seen those type of comments from people being serious around here.

I suggest you pose the question on DU. Although there are some populists here, you’ll find a much more welcoming environment amongst the occupy crowd. You could of course mention Romneycare and his liberal voting record, but if you want to attack his business I am sure there is a “certain” audience for that.
