Santorum lost big as an incumbent. Romney lost big to incumbent, Ted Kennedy. Big Difference!
His Lieutenant Governor ran for the top spot and lost by 20 points to the Rat. Hell of a Legacy Romney left behind.
Rick blundered in attaching himself to closely to the Bush Administration, by choosing Spector over Toomey, by not mending enough fences at home. But that was another battlefield. Romney also has going against him his weakness as the face of the Republican Party. If he doesnt present well, he cant command the unstinted support of a very active part of the Republican Party. Santorums weakness is that he is too conservative for the insiders in the party who are pandering to the homosexuals and the anti-religious crowd who seem to be on a roll..
Unless you lived through it here in PA, I don't think you can imagine the level of betrayal Santorum's foot soldiers felt when Santorum endorsed Specter. I know people who worked on both Toomey's and Santorum's previous campaigns who put Bobby Casey yard signs on their front lawns. Obviously, that was a mistake.
We've had to forgive him - much the way Newt's supporters have forgiven him his serial adultery.
And Santorum supporters, please stop PM'ing me that Rick did the right thing. I understand your position. I respectfully disagree. My position is that Toomey would've won in the general if he'd have gotten the party nod. All we wanted Santorum to do was stay out of the primary. If he'd have endorsed Specter in the general only, Rick could've re-won his Senate seat.
