Word For The Day, Monday, 2/6/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
"begs the question"
"Begging the question" is a form of logical fallacy in which a statement or claim is assumed to be true without evidence other than the statement or claim itself. When one begs the question, the initial assumption of a statement is treated as already proven without any logic to show why the statement is true in the first place. A simple example would be "I think he is unattractive because he is ugly." The adjective "ugly" does not explain why the subject is "unattractive" -- they virtually amount to the same subjective meaning, and the proof is merely a restatement of the premise. The sentence has begged the question. To beg the question does not mean "to raise the question." (e.g. "It begs the question, why is he so dumb?") This is a common error of usage made by those who mistake the word "question" in the phrase to refer to a literal question. Sadly, the error has grown more and more common with time, such that even journalists, advertisers, and major mass media entities have fallen prey to "BTQ Abuse."
While descriptivists and other such laissez-faire linguists are content to allow the misconception to fall into the vernacular, it cannot be denied that logic and philosophy stand to lose an important conceptual label should the meaning of BTQ become diluted to the point that we must constantly distinguish between the traditional usage and the erroneous "modern" usage. This is why we fight
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
I think Obams is incompetent because he can't grip his butt with both hands.

No pushing at the door please!
Gosh, i hope i got this example right, truthy!!
Guest lecturer today is Truthy. This was an issue he raised with me last week, which he feels needs to be addressed, and so i am featuring him today as our Phrase for the day. Please submit homework examples which BEG THE QUESTION. i am hoping that Truthy will help me grade the hw for accuracy bc it’s entirely possible that i will merely RAISE rather than BEG the question my own self.
Good morning - congrats to Giants fans on our board. I watched the first half then switched to Downton Abbey, but recorded it so I can go back and see what happened. However, apparently Gisele blamed “Tommy’s” receivers so I don’t have to watch
I deserve a second term but we’re not done,
WTF does that mean?
Perhaps he misread the teleprompter when it wanted him to say BECAUSE.......
For my special guest lecture, we will review the correct usage of the word, “myself”.
Not correct: “please turn the homework in to myself or xsmommy....”
Perhaps Gisele should have prayed harder.
he is a living breathing non sequitur.
did he say that? too funny. exposing himself.
i prefer to say myOWNself.... ; )
See truthy because he’s arranging the buses for the March....
I want the bus that has wi-fi!
It begs the question — why are all Conservatives so selfish and cruel??
Yours is close, xsmommy. mikrofon nailed it.
Or had more praying friends...? lol
Begging the question made it irate and loathe to respond in a positive manner resulting in pleas falling on deaf inquiries.
Lying rooster inhaler.
i would expect Mik to nail it! A+++ i am so bad with DEVICES! secret, you are a device fan, are you loving Truthy’s lecture?
Just like Ronnie said....
i have a question for you, what did Ronnie actually say?
