Mad Men is very faithful to the 60's..everyone smoked..incessantly..remember it was the era of BIG Tobacco, and tobacco companies were the largest advertisers on TV..they had tremendous power over the airwaves..and everyone drank.....to a fault..the 3 martine lunch was the norm..

There's a classic tale.. about a memo that one advertising company suposedly sent to all its executives..( I think I can remember it:

"Management requires that all employees on company expense accounts do not drink vodka. Any other liquor is permissible. Because vodka is odorless, and thus it is impossible to gtell if you have if fact been drinking, we would not want the clients to think that the stupid statements coming from your mouths were your real ideas, and not because you were in fact bombed at the time."

I know some people in advertising and with the exception of the smoking, not much has changed. One agency in Chicago has a full bar onsite- literally a floor of their office building is set up like a pub. One of the departments in another agency has Margarita Fridays. This is on top of very boozily celebrating every single holiday, not to mention client freebies that are sent over...

It makes me tired just thinking about it. LOL
