The nose was shortened, yeah... and the entire head. The Sphinx was originally a dog - Anubis, who stood for Sirius, the most important star in the egyptian pantheon. See Robert Temple's book, "The Sphinx Mystery."
WINNER!...Early cosmetic surgery..lol
The weathering and decay show well. Compared to the hard lines and features of the head...The contrast is noticeable when you look at it...Body worn to blocks...Head has sharp features....Hmmmm.
Anubis makes a lot more sense, both in proportions and just general shape, but also in symbology of Egypt. There also were periods in Egypt when they jumped back and forth between gods or even a brief monotheistic phase where they only allowed worship of Ra and either destroyed or defaced opposing god’s images- thus why Anubis would be changed. (or it could have simply broken and they changed it to something that fit what was left).
I’d never seen that image of the Sphinx as Anubis. That makes a lot more sense proportionally. What a grand statue that must have been when it was new. However far back in time that might be.
