I was using whatever the default on Chrome is. I shifted it to the “New View” and got the same basic screen with a few minor changes. No advertising whatsoever.
You must be using the standard interface. AFAIK the offer to load the Basic HTML interface only comes up if the standard fails to load in a certain amount of time. Mine often wouldn’t load on time due to too many tabs and slow DSL, but I use it anyway now because it gets rid of the sections for Google’s other products that I don’t use (and does load much faster)..
