Kobe Bryant, it seems, is soon to be a free agent.

The Los Angeles Lakers star's wife of 10 years, Vanessa, filed for divorce Friday in Orange County, Calif., a source confirms to PEOPLE.

Bryant, 33, and his soon-to-be ex-wife, 29, married in April 2001, when Bryant was just 22 and she 18. They have two daughters, Natalia Diamante Bryant, 8, and Gianna Maria-Onore, 5.

The couple released a statement to The Insider's Kevin Frazier saying, "The couple say "We ask that in the interest of our young children and in light of the upcoming holiday season, the public respect our privacy during this most difficult time."

“I was 18 and hubby just 23 when we married and this past June we celebrated our 50 Anniversary....so your statement doesn’t apply to all...”

I never said that it did apply to all. Sorry if you mistakenly got that impression.

“we have a son 39 and daughter 36”

And have they followed you example in marriage?

TMZ is reporting that Kobe is worth $360M. That’s a lot of money.

She gave it a try, tried to keep it going for a long time. How do we know how she was able to deal with what he did? If she stayed with him for ten years, she’s not a golddigger, so just stop that stuff.

Imho, it’s actually amazing that this marriage lasted this long based on their extremely young ages when married, and the stress and special challenges of Kobe’s career and social/economic status. What a shame. They seem like they have a nice family and truly love one another....here’s hoping they are able to work through their problems...

B-ball players are on the road a lot. I’ve been straight-up all my marriage but don’t know if placed in that environment. I bet this has a lot to do with it. Most can’t even imagine the ‘sweet thang’ looking to hook-up with players.

“Never a good idea to marry that young.”

That’s what I always heard my grandmother tell her grandaughters. When they would object “ but, Grandma, you were just 15 when you married Grandpa! she would say “yes, honey, but I married your Grandpa.”

This reminds me of Janet Elway, former wife of quarterback John Elway. After John's career was over, Super Bowls won, she quietly divorced him with little fanfare.

The mostly unstated version was that John had been unfaithful repeatedly while he was in the NFL, and their marriage was over a long time before, but she let the fans have their hero and didn't tear him down in public.

The sad thing that puts things into perspective is that after all he accomplished in his career, when he went to the Hall of Fame induction, he was alone. His family was not there.
