One thing that gets to me is that everything has to be all or nothing. Why couldn’t both male and female shaman exist?

There are both male and female shamans in some cultures. An absolutely fabulous book that explores this subject is Entering the Circle, by Olga Kharitidi. I highly recommend it....one of the best books I have read.

Exactly. In Mongolia, for example, many shamans are women but not all. And of course, Mongolia is anything but a feminist’s dream society…
