According to Business Insider, 23-year-old Jessica Sporty was deep in debt. Sporty had difficulties living on her $45,000 annual salary after spending nearly $1,500 a month in rent, paying her credit card bill, and buying food.

$45,000/ year - (Rent + food) = LOTS of credit card debt.

Someone needs to learn to live within her means.

Let’s re-run those numbers.

$45,000/year gross.
Being NYC, yank half that in taxes.
$22,500 net.
$1,500/mo * 12 = $18,000/yr rent.
$4,500/yr left. That’s $375/mo, or $12.50/day.

Live within means, indeed. Hard to live in NYC for about ten bucks a day after taxes & housing.

Step #1: MOVE.

45,000 a year pre-tax gets you about 33K after taxes. She’s paying 18,000 a year in rent. That leaves 15,000 for everything else. Not so easy in New York.

No, she’s in NYC. Taxes are a killer and $1500 for rent is well beyond her means with her salary. In NYC, the standard is to require 40X the monthly rent in gross salary—and that would be a third more than she’s making.
