In general, tariffs are very bad economic policy. They can sometimes be useful as a weapon against specific countries that are using economic policy as part of an overall strategy to harm us. But in general, all they do is add costs.
Now, if you wanted to cut other taxes, such as excises and sales taxes, you might be in a better position.
I’m for that.
Do you realize the total dollar value of all imports as recently as 2009 was almost identical to the dollar value of all taxes collected. Within a percent.
That means, at 2009 levels we could replace (and eliminate) every other tax dollar, with one single, 100% import tariff.
So. Why are we frozen in stubborn refusal to move?
It’s not like what we’re doing now, is working.
It’s destroying our country.
