Hi everyone-- I'm a longtime lurker of FR and just signed up to get your feedback about a question I am sure many of us are asking ourselves. As a lifelong conservative, I am concerned about the possibility (probability?) of Mitt Romney receiving the GOP nomination for president next year. Many of my friends are convinced Romney will win the nomination, but I am very concerned that if he were to get into office, he would not stand up for the conservative policies we desperately need after the past four years. I want Obama out of office more than anything, but how do I reconcile the possibility of supporting Romney? Is there a third party candidate to draft who could help us take back our country?
Any feedback from all of you is much appreciated-- I just don't know what to think at this point. Thanks!
This time in 2007, the media assumed that Giuliani was the frontrunner.

Just a little perspective.
I will vote for the Republican nominee no matter who it is. I hope that is not Romney the chameleon, but if it is I feel I’d have no other choice. Not going to waste my vote on 3rd party candidates that will never amount to anything.
The only real option is working to prevent Romney from being the nominee. In my opinion Perry is the only viable alternative, however if he can’t resurrect his campaign I will probably throw my support behind Newt and hope for the best.
Exactly. My perspective is that 71% oppose Romney and all that is necessary is to get a sizable majority of those to center on one candidate - Herman Cain is way out in front of the ABR crowd.
“I’m tired of voting for people I hate just because the other guy is worse.”
No argument from me there. When you find a current day George Washington & convince him to run, let me know.
I will work for Cain in the primary. But if Romney ends up the nominee I will support him. Obama is going to rule through executive order & I doubt the Republicans will fight him. We have GOT to get him out of there!
I want Obama out of the White House as well. I also do not want Obama-lite to replace him. I want a Conservative. Right now, I’m open to Perry, Cain, Bachman. Rommney is a non-starter with me.
The only fix that will keep Herman Cain from winning is bickering among conservatives, and that should lessen when candidates start dropping out, and the race becomes the Tea Party against the establishment.
Ron Paul is talking third party again. How could you forget him?
In Romney's case, I am heartily in favor of tar and feathers - but then again, people sometimes tell me I'm a bit old-fashoined...
Your entire history is two Romney threads. No replies by you yet. Since you've been a "long time lurker" you must know that's a no-no? No?
Regardless of who is nominated or elected, we need to control both houses of Congress with large majorities. With Obama or Romney, the best we may hope for is gridlock between the Executive and Legislative branches.
Walt Williams.
I say we draft him and FORCE him to serve whether he wants to be president or not.
That's the funniest thing I've read all day.
Romney would be Obama light with the benefit (to the Dems) that his failure will allow the Dems to blame Romney/GOP for the continuing disaster.
A Romney nomination would be disastrous. It is clear, from his number of flip-flops and his policies in running Massachusetts, that he is just another establishment politician.
There is a significant mass of voters who would choose a nominated Romney in the General Election as the lesser of two evils. Voting for a third party or write-in candidate could result in a Ross Perot-style mass divergence that would result in four more years of Obama (which would be far more disastrous than four years of Romney). The best way to avert this disaster would to be to show the truth about Romney to those likely to vote for him. Another candidate (Cain seems likely right now) should be propped up in opposition to him.
Unfortunately, groups such as the Tea Party have not completely gotten rid of the RINO elite. As long as the RINO’s remain in control of the Republican Party, and put forward candidates like Romney, we are fighting with our hands tied behind our backs. The nation is spiraling into an abyss, and continuing to allow the left-wing elite to influence the decisions of genuine conservatives will only result in more big government policies being passed. A simple glance at the actions of the Federal government over the last two years should reveal that is too late for Republicans to compromise any more. If we are to reverse the impending collapse, we must drive the RINO’s out of the party.
get a verizon pre-pay cell phone at Walmart with an Iowa phone number and make calls to Iowa for herman cain. $2/day.
Romney must be stopped in the early states. IA and SC are crucial.
If Romney is the GOP candidate, we will work against
the GOP.
We will write in a conservative’s name.
“Walt Williams. I say we draft him and FORCE him to serve whether he wants to be president or not.”
Agree, Walter has more IQ in his pinkie than the Cretin-in-Chief can even imagine.
I’d vote for him.
And for the Nth time (where N iw a googolplex), I’ll NEVAH vote for RINOmney.
So the solution will be to overwhelm Romney in the Primaries with someone who can beat both him AND Obama.
So I am supporting Herman Cain. His meteoric rise in the polls shows that he resonates with voters of the Tea Party and non-RINO Republicans.
