Hello FRiends. Lately I've noticed that whenever I have a question about something, my first impulse is to look it up on FR. Anyway, that explains this vanity.
Do any FReepers (guys) have experience giving themselves a haircut? My hair grows faster'n a weed and I don't care to waste time and money constantly running to the barber. Plus my hair is thick, coarse, and wavy, so once it gets even moderately long I end up looking either like the 'Hall' in Hall and Oates, or else a 1950's greaser. Not pretty.
I have an electric clipper with a few attachments. I'm not shooting for anything spectacular, just looking for tips on how to get the back, avoid gouging clumps out, etc.
Thanks in advance.
I have hair having the same thickness and characteristics. Check out your local beauty/barber college and you’ll pay about half to 2/3 what you pay in a normal haircut shop. Students are monitored by instructors who do any clean-up or finish work when it’s not 100% correct.
The rare success I've enjoyed has come only by devoting patience and much more time than the process would take in a social setting. Specifically, it took four hours, and nothing better to do, and the result was mediocre at best.
The problem, unless a person has no social concerns with cutting one's hair and the motivation is strictly utilitarian of course, is the process is a bit like writing in cursive with the left hand (if right-handed, and vice versa).
If one has any social motivation whatsoever for getting a haircut, even for the sake as minimal as the sensitivities of a wife for example, then it's best to find a barber.
It's a cleansing ritual of renewal that's much more quickly done than undone, and it will always grow back, or almost always.
How you look in a buzz cut? (I shave my dome, there is very little to shave)
Vanity is your only obstacle

With a buzz, I look like a little kid. Still, neat is best in my book, and if its easy to do...
Toss this around ... “Neat” or “So easy I can do it myself”
(Actually with me it started out with a Burr, then I shaved my head... then if I get Lazy it’s a Burr again until I save it all off again)
I have had positive reviews on both ... so it works for me

Yes, I just now saw your post. Great minds think a like! Used my Flowbee this weekend.
Got two compliments on my cut today, one from a GI on a nearby Army base this morning. He’d just left the military barber. I don’t think he liked his “high and tight” too much.
